About
R. Burton Pfeiffer III, M.D., FACS, has been with Wiregrass Surgical as a vascular surgeon/specialist since 2005. He grew up in Mobile, AL, where he attended UMS High School and subsequently attended Vanderbilt University, where he received a degree in pre-medicine and psychology, graduating cum laude in 1993.
Dr. Pfeiffer received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1999. After medical school, he chose to pursue surgical training and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2004. He was a Carl G. Evers M.D. Top Five Surgical Resident of the Year Award winner in 2001 and 2002. He also received the James D. Hardy Department of Surgery Junior Student Teaching Award in 2002.
Following his general surgery residency, Dr. Pfeiffer chose to specialize in vascular surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX, where he completed a vascular surgical fellowship in 2005.
Dr. Pfeiffer is board certified in both vascular and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and was the first board-certified and fellowship-trained vascular surgeon/specialist to come to Dothan.
Dr. Pfeiffer has developed a thorough approach to the treatment of vascular patients. This includes lifelong follow up of his patients’ chronic and progressive vascular problems. In addition, he maintains an IAC-accredited non-invasive vascular laboratory, conveniently located within his office, which is dedicated to the follow up and diagnosis of vascular disease. This greatly facilitates patient care and monitoring of the complex problems that vascular patients have during their lives and is an important part of a patients’ care.
Dr. Pfeiffer’s passion for medicine began early in his life. His grandfather was a general practitioner in Birmingham, AL, for 40 years and his father has been a practicing vascular surgeon in Mobile, AL, for the last 35 years. These experiences undoubtedly gave Dr. Pfeiffer an understanding of what type of long-term commitment and dedication a physician must have to his patients. These principles still guide Dr. Pfeiffer today in his approach to vascular care.
Dr. Pfeiffer and his wife have two children. He enjoys spending his free time with his family in the outdoors.
